June 9, 2007 I decided to try to keep a blog for some of you who have requested for me to keep in touch with you over the summer. For those of you who don’t know, I’m working as a counselor for Camp Rockmont, a boy’s Christian camp in Black Mountain, NC. I am going to try to keep this blog all summer and update it as often as I can. Please read, enjoy, comment, and definitely look at some of my pics. I have just left our last session of training for orientation. This means that campers move in tomorrow. Camp attendance for the first week is not at capacity, though, so several counselors don’t have campers for another week-I am one of those people. This means that starting June 17th I will have a cabin full every week. I am really excited about having 8 guys under me but I’m still just a little nervous. I can say with confidence that I am much more prepared after the week of training I just went through than I was a week ago. I am so glad I am getting to fulfill this opportunity God has given me this summer. I have already been changed in so many ways and I look forward to the growth that lies ahead for me this summer. The type of people I am working with are some of the best people I have ever had an opportunity to be around. What is even more incredible is that I am not only working with them, but we are our own community; getting to live, work, eat, have fun, worship, build, and grow together. I am just looking forward to tomorrow and the excitement that the campers are going to bring to Rockmont, even if I don’t have campers personally. I'll share more as time permits. Fall Break is over:( Sad times. Only two weeks until Thanksgiving, though, so I'm looking forward to that. Today seemed to last forever! 5 classes a day kill me! I realized today that next week is another "exam week" with 3 tests in 4 days-but I guess I shouldn't complain too much, that is better than the last two times with all 5 exams falling within 4 or 5 days. I started studying for accounting tonight, though, and I'm not too worried about AP EC so the week shouldn't be too bad. In other news, I found another 4-Runner yesterday! It's in pretty good condition and I'm really excited about having one again. If anyone wants a 2000 Nissan Frontier or knows someone that might let me know or give them my number, please. Just another Thursday tomorrow-NO classes, YAY! but I still have plenty to do. I'll be in the office in the morning, fun times-ask me about some stories dealing with Kim Erwin, they'll give you a good laugh. Tomorrow afternoon/evening I'll be at the house cleaning out my truck-its pretty sad that I clean it up only to get rid of it, but o'well. My advice to newly elected officials: Everyone in life has a purpose, for some, it's to serve as a BAD EXAMPLE. What is yours? Make your purpose worthwhile, you've got people counting on you! Ok so I feel like expressing my feeling regarding some issues relavent to the upcoming election. I was looking through stuff on facebook and some of the political groups made me mad so I thought I'll start sharing my thoughts on issues. Give me feedback on what I write and I would love to get your opinion, thoughts, feelings, etc. on these issues. My first topic-Farm Subsidies (Agriculture is very important for all of us- "Where would you be without agriculture and forestry? - Skinny, Naked, Hungry, and Homeless") This is my respose to those who are saying that Farm Subsidies are a bad thing for America because to much money gets "given" to farms (whether a big company or a family farm) and we are hurting poorer, less developed countries because we are not importing the food they are producing. THIS NOTE GOES SPECIFICALLY TO THOSE WHO ARE JOINING THE "END FARM SUBSIDIES" GROUPS DO YOU REALIZE WHAT WOULD HAPPEN WITHOUT SUBSIDIES?...The cost of food for everyone would skyrocket out of control, we still wouldn't be helping those poor countries...why-because we have the FDA and UDSA, two very important organizations that do everything they can to assure that the food supply for America is kept up with demand and they do everything they can to keep food supplies safe for consumption (think about all the recent E. coli scares). We wouldn't start importing food from these countries for two reasons-there is no way to assure that the food is safe for consumption and it would cost way to much. Farm subsidies are necessary to keep a constant flow of safe, cheap food for Americans to eat. Show support for America and US Farms and Farmers-research the options for such political positions as State Commissioners of Agriculture and vote for the person you feel is best suited for the job--it really is just as important, if not more so, as who will be the next Governor or Mayor.
